HONOR THE CODE
MISSION: To inspire high school student athletes to honor and keep their school’s code of conduct thus avoiding risky behaviors such as alcohol and other drug use.
HONOR THE CODE is a pilot project that is giving four selected high schools in Section III sports (Lafayette, Marcellus , Onondaga, and Skaneateles Central School Districts) a framework for success from the fall of 2011 to the summer of 2012.
RECOGNITION:
All four schools will receive public recognition. Awards will be given for their unique contributions to HONOR THE CODE and for achieving their goals. A plaque or trophy will be given to each participating school to be placed in the sports display case. Students will receive HONOR THE CODE tokens to affirm their participation. A mini-grant will be given to each school’s athletic department. More ideas are being formulated.
AWARENESS:
HONOR THE CODE is raising community awareness about the efforts that these school districts are making to support their athletes in making healthy choices. Attention will be given to the many success stories in each school district through our local media (television, the internet, and newspaper) to spread the word and build community support. Community coalitions will be mobilized to support HONOR THE CODE.
EDUCATION:
Prevention is at the heart of all codes and all our efforts. The old adage “an ounce of prevention” remains true. Resources are being offered to school districts to support their efforts. Schools are linked in order to share ideas and resources and learn from each other. Training and education is being offered targeted to prevent high risk behaviors and encourage healthy choices.
