Addiction Screening Tools
The ability to self-assess for a number of possible drug or behavioral abuse/addictions is really quite simple.
Years of research and trials have honed the following screening devices to a high level of accuracy; the results are valid if the person taking the screens is honest with themselves in their response. The result is NOT a diagnosis, which must be performed by a Qualified Health Professional. The results highlight indicators of a problem, which should prompt the individual to seeking help. Like any disease, the earlier the intervention the better the prognosis.
To validate a non-abuse or non-addiction screening we encourage you to “rule out” the possibility of abuse/addiction potentials by obtaining an evaluation at a NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (http://www.oasas.state.ny.us)licensed facility.
Indicator examples: The screening identified the following indicators:
| 1. webbed feet 2. feathers 3. lays eggs 4. quacks |
These are all indicators that the creature is most likely a duck, but to confirm that we’d need to have the animal evaluated by a biologist.
THREE points:
- Abuse and addiction are nondiscriminatory – they afflict over 10% of the population regardless of ethnicity, geographic location, gender, income level, age, or culture;
- Abuse and addiction is a BRAIN disease with biological impacts that dictate behaviors. Learn more at: http://www.drugabuse.gov/Infofacts/understand.html
- Recovery is an awesome possible and positive journey. Today in this country we have approximately 23 million addicts who need help, some are receiving it but most are living in the disease. At the same time, we have approximately 20 million people in recovery, living a different life, making positive contributions to their families and communities.
