Neurochemistry and the Brain

All drugs of abuse activate the dopamine system in the reward center of the brain. Recent research has improved our understanding of addiction as an illness. This workshop will explore information on the reward center as well as neurotransmitters and the brain/body connection. The material provides biological aspects of chemical dependency that impact the recovery progress while providing practical applications for improved treatment outcomes.

Spirituality: Addiction & Recovery

Brief Therapy

Participants will gain an understanding of the evolution of brief therapy. Students will explore the similarities and differences between this therapy model and traditional therapies. Topics include: the stages of brief therapy, how to integrate group brief therapy techniques into group modalities, and ethical issues using this particular model of therapy.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy
Tuesday & Wednesday, June 5 & 6, 2012
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Topics for discussion include: overview of the motivational enhancement model, stages of a client's readiness for behavioral change, building motivation for change, and how this approach compares to other treatment approaches. Counselor tasks and strategies as well as potential problems that may arise as they relate to stages of change and relapse prevention will be discussed. This entry-level training is designed for addiction professionals with less than three years of experience in the field.

DSM-IV TR

The DSM-V is being released in 2013, meanwhile changes were made to correct errors identified in DSM-IV, as well as to reflect the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding system. This workshop will help the experienced clinician as well as the newcomer understand and navigate this diagnostic tool.

Ethical principles support the code of conduct that addresses all counselors’ behaviors in treating substance abuse clients. NYS OASAS requires that all credentialed counselors and trainees maintain these standards to ensure the protection and fair treatment of all under the care of substance abuse professionals. Course material covered includes: confidentiality including mandated reporting and federal protection, informed consent requirements, counselor-client relationships, values and counselor wellness.
