Providing trainings to Prevention Providers and Coalitions is one component of the Prevention Resource Center. Please see below a list of trainings that are available. Please specific months/dates you would like the training in your request message. We will make every effort we can to honor the request for training.

Environmental Strategies- Roles for Communications Media:

This training provides an overview of environmental strategies used to reduce and prevent substance abuse, describes uses of communications media to support these strategies, and offers information on social norms misperceptions campaigns. This course is a 4-hour course.  CPP/CPS credit available.

Ethics in Prevention

This course addresses the role and application of ethics in substance abuse prevention. Using cases and interactive activities, participants will explore the six standards in the Prevention Code of Ethics and learn to use a 4-step decision-making process to assess, address, and evaluate a range of ethical issues. In addition, five discussion forums, facilitated by an experienced course moderator, provide opportunities for participants to apply lessons learned.   This is a 7-hour course.  CPP/CPS Credit Available.

Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training

The Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) is a foundational course of study in substance abuse prevention that blends a four-day, in-person component with an interactive online unit. The SAPST was developed by SAMHSA's Center for Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT). It is for entry-level prevention practitioners working in states, jurisdictions, tribes and communities, and also appropriate for professionals working in related fields, e.g. treatment, mental health etc. The SAPST training is grounded in current research and SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework. It provides knowledge and skills to implement effective, data-driven prevention programs, practices, and policies that reduce behavioral health disparities and improve wellness.  This is a 31-hour course.   CPP/CPS credit available.

Strategic Prevention Framework Training

SPF is a planning process for preventing substance use and misuse. The five steps and two guiding principles of the SPF offer prevention professionals a comprehensive process for addressing the substance misuse and related behavioral health problems facing their communities.  This training will walk participants through all the SPF steps.  This training is great for people who want to know more about SPF but can’t commit to the 31 hour SAPST training.

Prevention Resource Centers Overview

This training will provide an overview to the Prevention Resource Centers in New York State.  It will allow participates to learn more about PRCs and how they function and work with coalitions and prevention providers.

Needs Assessment for Providers

This training will walk participants through how to utilize data to assess the needs of the community. It will introduce the topics of quantitative and qualitative data, prioritizing goals and objects and culminate with the parts of a community needs assessment.
